Meet Our Pastor - Dr. Marion J. Miller

Dr. Marion J. Miller was appointed as the 65th senior pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church in 2016. Before moving to Jeffersonville, Dr. Miller has served several growing congregations in a variety of settings throughout a few decades.

In 1989, Dr. Miller joined Light of the World Christian Church where she served on the Diaconate and many other ministry teams.  She accepted her calling under the leadership of Bishop T. G. Benjamin, Jr. in 1999.  Dr. Miller has not always been a pastor; she served 23 years as a senior executive in human resource management for Xerox Corporation.  She also served as a senior executive and Chaplain for five years at Larue Carter Hospital, while simultaneously serving as the resident pastor at a satellite ministry of St. Luke's UMC called The Garden. She joined St. Luke’s clergy staff full-time in 2005.

Dr. Miller served as the pastor of the fastest growing multicultural gathering in the city called Later @ St. Luke’s. This church within a church was very dynamic and innovative; and was opened to everyone. These gatherings offered many dimensions, expressions and avenues for worship. Dr. Miller was the recipient of a $55,000.00 Lilly Grant where she and six (6) other pastors travel coast-to-coast  researching multicultural worship for 3 years.

Dr. Miller is a graduate of Indiana Wesleyan University and from Christian Theological Seminary where she earned a Mater of Divinity.  She returned to Christian Theological Seminary to receive her Doctor of Ministry degree in 2008, which focuses on Practical Theology in the study of Congregational Leadership and Development. She was employed by Christian Theological Seminary for 10 years in Field Education, mentoring ministerial students. She was also employed by Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary where she served in Field Education. She has remained at the seminary on the Black Studies Advisory Council; where she was a guest presenter at the 2020 Black Studies Consultation; speaking on "African American Church Growth."

Dr. Miller is a recognized ordained minister with “good standings” in two separate distinct denominations, Disciples of Christ and United Methodist.  She also serves on various race relations study circles and boards.  She works extensively with the Interfaith Hunger Initiative to eradicate world hunger.

She is one of 45 recipients who were awarded a 5-month fellowship with the “Diversity Leadership Academy” from the American Institute for Managing Diversity.  Dr. Miller is a lifetime member of the NAACP. Most recently she received the NAACP Heritage Award for outstanding leadership and community service in 2017. For several decades, Dr. Miller has been a visionary leader in her own right.  She is passionate about helping to build on the promise of diversity, by encouraging people in our workplaces, our communities, and our society to move to the next level.

Dr. Miller and her husband, John, raised two daughters: Tonya Miller-Cherry and Marla Miller-Lewis and now has eight grand children. She loves to cook, play golf, enjoys her grand children, exercising, traveling, and sports.
